The Vienna Biocenter Summer School provides a unique opportunity for approx. 30 undergraduate students to work side by side with leading researchers in a dynamic scientific environment


Our programme aims to attract talented students from around the world, creating a vibrant and diverse atmosphere. It is the perfect preparation for those students who are interested in graduate study in the life sciences arena. Applicants who are successful are provided with accommodation, a travel allowance and a stipend for the duration of the scholarship. The programme, starts on the last Friday in June and finishes on the the last Friday of August each year.

The school is a collaboration between five of Europe’s leading research institutes: Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CEMM), Gregor Mendel Institute (GMI), Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA), Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) and the Max Perutz Labs (Max Perutz Labs) and is generously sponsored by the Max Birnstiel Foundation.

The Vienna Biocenter Summer Undergraduate Fellowships 2021 for Undergraduate Students Requirements

    Applications from students (BA (Hons), Master, MSc) from all around the world who are undergraduates/master students, and have completed at least two years of university study

To apply you need to have one of the following:

    Completed at least 2 years of a University study (e.g. 2-3 years of a Bachelor Hons study or 1 year of a Master study – by 30 June) as follows:
    (i) In Year 3 of a 4-year BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in a Life Science related subject
    (ii) In Year 4 of a 4-year BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in a Life Science related subject WITH an acceptance or intention to apply to a Master program (this will be checked later)
    (iii) In Year 1 of a 2-year Master course, MSc in a Life Science related subject
    (iv) In Year 2 of a US undergraduate Bachelor in a Life Science related subject
    (v) In Year 2 of a 4-Year BTech (india) in a Life Science related subject

    3-months research experience
    Good academic record
    High level of English language
    Evidence of enrolment in a University programme for the current academic year and the next year (if possible)

The programme consists of several components:

Research Project

Each fellow will be allocated a faculty member, with whom they will work closely. A diverse range of research projects are available in: Molecular biology, neuroscience, immunology, bioinformatics, RNA biology, stem cells, and biochemistry. The research project will focus on a current topic in the allocated lab. Supported by a member of the laboratory the scholar will be expected to perform experiments, analyse data, generate ideas, and discuss their results. In addition to practical laboratory work the scholar will also take part in lab meetings and journal clubs.


Lecture Series


The Vienna Biocenter Summer School includes a series of lectures given by faculty members on recent discoveries and state-of-the-art techniques in their respective field. Covering a broad range of topics the lectures will include the latest on small regulatory RNAs, the cell division apparatus and neuronal circuitry. These exclusive lectures will be held in an informal atmosphere to encourage interaction between scholars and faculty.

Scientific Symposium

The Vienna Biocenter Summer School concludes with a scientific symposium. In a short talk each scholar will present her/his findings to students and faculty. Prizes are awarded to the students that give the best presentations.

Are you having issues accessing the Npower Nexit Portal? The Npower NEXIT Portal seems to be working better than when it was launched. But some people have problems with verification, so we will show you how to verify, our understanding, a lot  Volunteers that have registered via Npower Nexit Portal are yet to receive a verification link to their email. According to Minister for humanitarian affairs, only those who have successfully verified their email after registration will gain access to the Nexit portal.


As you must have noticed, the Nexit portal is still in its construction phase. Remember the Honorable Minister of Humanitarian affairs, Sadiya Umar Farouq stated in her latest update that the portal will be up and running before or on Sunday after the portal went on Maintenance mode.


Our recommendation is that when you Successfully register on the Nexit portal and you don’t receive a verification email, you should remain calm because hands are on deck to rectify the issue.


Exited NPOWER VOLUNTEERS are to use THE SAME EMAIL they used in registering for Npower and which is recorded on their Npower profile to register on the NEXIT PORTAL. It is not necessary you use NPVN password for NEXIT but mandatory to use NPVN email for NEXIT.

Doc Accelerator Lab 2021 for Emerging & Sophomore Doc-makers

Doc Accelerator fellows will participate in a bespoke private lab where they will learn from industry experts and engage in indepth workshops. Fellows will also participate in Hot Docs Festival’s online industry programming. The program will focus on skills training and career advancement with a goal to foster an inclusive new generation of Canadian documentary filmmakers. Select fellows will also take part in a paid professional development mentorship in the year following the Festival.

Doc Accelerator Lab 2021 Application ELIGIBILITY

Ten to 12 Doc Accelerator fellows will be selected via an open application process. Applicants to the program must be:

  • Of at least one of the following priority groups: Black, Indigenous, a person of colour, Francophone, Deaf, or living with a disability
  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada legally entitled to work
  • An emerging or sophomore storyteller (i.e. three or fewer professional audio-visual production credits as a director or producer)
  • NOT currently enrolled as a student
  • Available flexible hours for the paid mentorship program that will take place at a mutually agreed time between April 2021-April 2022

Accessibility Support

Applicants must meet all of the following eligibility criteria to be considered for a grant. Specific eligibility criteria for the February 1, 2021 deadline is included below. Please confirm you meet all eligibility requirements before applying. Approval of online or locally based trainings and conferences is up to the discretion of EFN.

  • You must be a citizen of an eligible country.
  • You must currently be living and working in your home country.
  • You must have at least three years of paid work experience in a conservation-related field in your home country.
  • You must have applied to or already be accepted to participate in the proposed training at the time you submit your application.
  • Your current work and proposed training must help advance conservation in your home country.
  • You must not be enrolled in an academic degree program. Virtual courses that are part of a university degree program or online degree are not eligible.
  • You must have approval from your employer to participate in the proposed training and the promise of continued employment.
  • You must have a bank account in your own name that can receive US dollars and international wire transfers.
  • You must not have received funding from EFN in the past. Previous PDG recipients may be eligible for Alumni Grants.
  • The proposed training must take place at least 60 days after the application deadline.
  • You must submit all required documents by the application deadline.

 

Additional Criteria for February 1, 2021 Deadline

  • Only trainings and conferences that are available online or are locally based are eligible. Locally based courses are eligible if they require limited travel and follow national COVID-19 restrictions.
  • Trainings and conferences must be offered through an accredited institution.
  • If the proposed training requires an application, you must have already applied to or be accepted to participate at the time you submit your application.
  • Courses must be completed no later than November 1, 2021.
  • For online trainings or conferences, applicants must have a stable internet connection for coursework and a computer.
  • For online trainings or conferences, applicants must meet the minimum requirements designated by their course.
  • For online trainings or conferences, priority will be given to courses with a defined start and end date or “live sessions”.

Courses and expenses that will NOT be eligible:

  • Online courses that are part of a university degree program or online degree are not eligible.
  • EFN will not fund in-person trainings or travel that occurs outside the applicant’s home country.
  • Entirely free courses with NO associated fees will not be considered.
  • EFN will NOT cover the cost of a computer purchase.

Please check your entry for completeness and ensure your video does not exceed 90 seconds. Also, do not use unlicensed images, music, or video content in your submission.

Judges evaluate submissions and are looking for ideas that are especially innovative and clearly articulate the use of technology, feasibility, and scale of impact.

On March 30, 2021, Semi-Finalists will be invited via email to submit a more detailed proposal.

The round two application window opens March 30, 2021 and closes April 23, 2021 at 5pm PT. Finalists will be announced on June 2, 2021.

In addition to the information provided in round one, the online round two questionnaire for Semi-Finalists will include the following sections:

Celebrate the Winners

Once the submission period closes our judges will begin evaluating the submissions, looking for solutions that are especially innovative and which clearly articulate their use of technology, feasibility and scale of impact. Winners will be announced on June 29, 2021!

Cisco Global Problem Solver Challenge 2021 SPECIAL PRIZES

  • $50,000 USD Greenhouse Gas Solutions Prize
    A single team will be designated as the winner of this prize.
  • $50,000 USD Ethical AI Prize

Greenhouse Gas Solutions Prize

The Greenhouse Gas Solutions Prize will be awarded to a startup using technology to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) in the Earth’s atmosphere. This GHG reduction may come from:

• reductions in GHG emissions released during a product or process life cycle,

• direct removal of GHG emissions from the atmosphere,

• economic use of removed emissions or byproducts,

• implementation of already proposed solutions (such as from Project Drawdown®),

or other innovations to stop the increase—or even reverse—GHG concentrations in the Earth’s atmosphere. The winner of the Greenhouse Gas Solutions Prize will be awarded $50,000 USD to accelerate the development of their solution.

Ethical AI Prize

The Ethical AI Prize will be awarded to a startup designing artificial intelligence in an inherently ethical manner so that the solution addresses social, environmental, or technological challenges. We believe the ethical use of AI and machine learning can radically accelerate social impact while also reducing unintended societal harm. This $50,000 USD prize is being offered by Cisco’s Emerging Technologies and Incubation Group. The winner of the Ethical AI Prize will also be offered the chance to present their solution and get feedback from the Emerging Technologies and Incubation team. This exclusive opportunity will include up to five hours of technical mentorship in an area of the winner’s choice, plus a session with our engineering team to help expand the solution’s technical scope.

Digital Inclusivity Prize

The Digital Inclusivity Prize will be awarded to a startup using technology to ensure that no one is left behind, and that underserved communities are enabled to thrive in an increasingly digital word. The winning solution will be focused on closing the digital divide by addressing issues such as accessibility, affordability, and digital literacy to build a more inclusive digital world. This $50,000 USD prize is offered by Cisco’s Emerging Technologies and Incubation Group in the spirit of our new purpose to Power an Inclusive Future for All.  The winner of the Digital Inclusivity Prize will also be offered the chance to present their solution and get feedback from the Emerging Technologies and Incubation team. This exclusive opportunity will include up to five hours of technical mentorship in an area of the winner’s choice, plus a session with our engineering team to help expand the solution’s technical scope.

HBCU Startup Prize

Cisco’s Social Justice Beliefs and Actions framework commits to the strategic recovery, sustainability and legacy of historically Black colleges and universities, post-COVID and beyond. We believe in the importance of investing in African American/Black-owned startups. The HBCU Startup Prize will be awarded to a team with at least one founder who is a student or alumni of an HBCU, with an innovative technology solution that addresses a social or environmental problem. The winner of the HBCU Startup Prize will be awarded $50,000 USD to accelerate their solution.

Pandemic Response Prize

The Pandemic Response Prize will be awarded to a startup responding to COVID-19 or future pandemic crises. The winning team will have an innovative technology solution that accelerates the response to, or recovery from, COVID-19 and its physical, social, or economic impact. The winner of the Pandemic Response Prize will be awarded $50,000 USD

How to Join the Generation Connect Visionaries Board 2020

How to Join the Generation Connect Visionaries Board 2020 is the overarching initiative of the ITU Youth Strategy on the journey to World Telecommunication Development Conference 2021 (WTDC-21) and the WTDC-21 Generation Connect Global Youth Summit. The three pillars of the Youth Strategy are: Empower, Engage and Participate.

The Generation Connect Visionaries Board will be assembled as part of the efforts related to the implementation of the ITU Youth Strategy to further champion the voices of youth to advance digital development. Two ITU representatives, six nominated high-level appointees and six nominated youth experts/young people, will work together on a voluntary basis1, over a period of a year – 2021, to achieve the board’s strategic objectives.

 

  • r strategic guidance on youth participation and empowerment.
  • To identify and invite strategic partners to ensure youth engagement and youth participation in digital cooperation.
  • To advocate for meaningful youth engagement in digital cooperation, through different promotional activities, such as active social media campaigning and inspirational role model talks.

Deliverables

The key deliverables expected of the Generation Connect Visionaries Board include the following:.

  • Clear strategic guidance to the ITU on the implementation of the ITU Youth Strategy.
  • New partnerships with high-level partners, youth organisations and boards.
  • Strong awareness of WTDC-21 Generation Connect Global Youth Summit amongst board members’ own networks.
  • Successful and meaningful youth engagement before and during the WTDC-21 Generation Connect Global Youth Summit.

Generation Connect Visionaries Board 2020 Selection Criteria

The ITU will select board members for the Generation Connect Visionaries Board, based on the following criteria:

  • Active champion for youth engagement, empowerment, and participation.
  • Passionate and active involvement in digital cooperation and youth engagement.
  • Ability to offer strategic guidance and collaborate with the ITU for one year and support in the review after the one year has been completed.
  • Affiliated with at least one youth related organisation, network and/or initiative (local, national or international).
  • In 2021, willing to participate in promotional activities such as interviews, social media, webinars, and panel sessions.
  • Commitment to attend the four board meetings that will take place in 2021, before the November WTDC-21 Generation Connect Global Youth Summit.
  • At least one nominee should come from WTDC-21 host country – Ethiopia.
